Chapter 5- Prosperity

Douglass contrasted his childhood on Colonel Lloyd’s plantation with this arrival in Baltimore with the Auld’s. When good things happen to people is it because they deserve it or is it chance…or does luck play a role? Does God decide who to “bless” with certain good things?

One Response to Chapter 5- Prosperity

  1. Shaen Miller says:

This is a deeply philosophical and troubling question and one that will of necessity generate disparate responses. I would argue that their is no such thing as luck but rather Devine interventions. This however pre supposed that God chooses who to bless with good fortune. This would then question why He would allow “evil” people to prosper while allowing “good” people to suffer. The terrible institution of slavery and continuing racism presents this dilemma, and while I believe God is good and merciful I am at loss as to why He would allow such evil. My conclusion is that according to Deuteronomy 29:29 “Secret things belong to Jehovah our God; but the things that are revealed belong to us and our children for ever”.
