A Model for Success
A member of the Cristo Rey Network since 2002, Verbum Dei adopted an innovative Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP) created to fund inner-city college education.
CWSP is an innovative and award winning successful partnership between business, education and the young men of Verbum Dei in Watts.
Corporate partners provide one “full-time equivalent” student internship for a competitive fee. The position is filled by four highly motivated young men with an average work attendance of 99%. Each student intern works five full days a month on a rotational basis. They attend classes and participate in extracurricular activities the remaining days.
Transportation, insurance, workers compensation, Department of Labor compliance, I9 completion and work permits associated with the student interns are managed by Verbum Dei Jesuit High School. A CWSP staff member is assigned to each corporate partner to co-manage the students.
Supervisors complete a semi-annual performance evaluation with each student worker and on average, 96% of students are meeting expectations of their position and 96% of our students meet or exceeded expectations. On average, 40% of our senior year students work at the same company they started with their freshman year.
This program also offers our corporate partners an opportunity to achieve corporate diversity and make a very direct and tangible difference in the lives of young men seeking a better future through quality education and work experience in a corporate environment.
