President's Message

Welcome to Verbum Dei High School.

This virtual home of the Eagles will give you information about our students, our faculty, and staff, our academic and co-curricular programs. More than that, I hope it will give you a sense of the spirit of the place – young men learning, working, playing, and praying together for their futures.

Verbum Dei was founded in 1962 and has educated hundreds of students from Watts and the surrounding neighborhoods preparing them for college and for life. The school enjoys a rich heritage that started with the Divine Word Missionaries and now with the Society of Jesus, the Jesuits. The Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles continues to sponsor the school and is committed to its success.

We joined the Cristo Rey Network in 2002 and have embraced their mission to “transform urban America, one student at a time.” With the Corporate Work Study Program (Hire4ED), our students work one day a week in a variety of office environments in greater Los Angeles and go to school four days a week. Our academic program is college preparatory, so our expectations for student achievement are high. We have a dedicated faculty and staff ready to help in any way to ensure that our students develop their personal potential in classes, at their job-sites, and in all their school activities.

The school relies on the generosity of many friends – alumni, parents, prayerful supporters, benefactors, corporate partners – to provide what we need. Tuition and the work-study program do not match the cost of education, so we are always eager to meet new friends to help us. Let me know if you would like information on how to help the young men, the faculty, and staff at Verbum Dei High School.

Please accept my prayers and the prayers of the Verbum Dei family for you and your family.

Sincerely,

William Muller, SJ

President
