Curriculum of Verbum Dei

The fundamental goal of a Verbum Dei education, and therefore of our curriculum, is to provide the students with a holistic Catholic education.  As “Verbum Dei” means “Word of God”, whatever is done here is inspired by and reflects God’s Word, not only in explicit Religion courses, but in all courses, which are an exploration of God’s presence and purpose throughout creation and in the whole range of human accomplishment.
(Vatican Council II, Gaudium et Spes, n. 11)

In common with all the Catholic schools of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, Verbum Dei requires all students to complete academic courses in Religion, English, Mathematics, Science, Language Arts, History and Social Science, Art, Health, Physical Education, as well ad Keyboarding and Computer Usage.

Verbum Dei provides a college preparatory curriculum.  This means that every student who fulfills the Verbum Dei requirements also fulfills the subject requirements for admission to the University of California and the California State University  systems as well as those of almost every college and university in the United States.

Students must meet or exceed the following requirements in order to be eligible for graduation:

Have a cumulative overall academic Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher.

Have no “F” on the report card that has not been retaken

* Transfer students are not required to earn Religion credits for the years during which they did not attend a Catholic high school.

** Health is offered to all incoming freshmen and transfer students through the annual summer SOAR program.  Students who o not pass or do not take Health at Verbum Dei must complete the requirement elsewhere and transfer in the grade and credits.  The Physical Education requirement has changed and affects on the Class of 2009 students and all transfers who have not completed this requirement at their prior school.  These students must participate in three quarters of athletics at Verbum Dei in order to earn the Physical Education credits.
