President's Message
Welcome
to Verbum Dei High School.
This virtual home of the Eagles
will give you information about
our students, our faculty, and
staff, our academic and
co-curricular programs. More
than that, I hope it will give
you a sense of the spirit of the
place – young men learning,
working, playing, and praying
together for their futures.
Verbum Dei was founded in 1962
and has educated thousands of
students from Watts and the
surrounding neighborhoods
preparing them for college and
for life. The school enjoys a
rich heritage that started with
the Divine Word Missionaries and
now with the Society of Jesus,
the Jesuits. The Catholic
Archdiocese of Los Angeles
continues to sponsor the school
and is committed to its success.
We joined the Cristo Rey Network
in 2002 and have embraced the
mission to “transform urban
America, one student at a time.”
Every Verbum Dei student
receives a scholarship grant
while he attends the Verb and
more than half the student body
receives financial tuition
assistance. We offer our student
body a college-ready curriculum
and research-based instruction.
For the past few years, every
Verbum Dei senior has been
accepted into college, 70% into
four-year colleges and
universities.
In the Cristo Rey Corporate Work
Study Program, every student
works one day a week in a
variety of office environments
in greater Los Angeles and goes
to school four days a week in a
program that is unique in
Southern California.
We rely on the generosity of
many friends – benefactors,
corporate partners, alumni,
parents, prayerful supporters –
to provide what we need. Tuition
and the work-study program do
not match the cost of education,
so we are always eager to meet
new friends to help us. Let me
know if you would like
information on how to help the
young men at the Verb.
Please accept my prayers and the
prayers of the Verbum Dei family
for you and your family.
Sincerely,
William Muller, SJ
President
